America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) are now at the lowest they have been since November 1982. At full capacity, the SPR can hold 714 million barrels of oil. That full capacity was slightly exceeded in 2010 at 726.5mb. Under the Biden Administration they declined from 638mb to 392mb. As of September 11, the SPR has been further depleted to 284.96mb.
This level of reserves could have serious consequences. Federal law prohibits drawdowns below 252.4mb. However, drawing the SPRs below 300mb risk damaging the caverns in which it is stored, creating “thermal shock, salt wall dissolution, and an oil-water sludge rising into surface pumps.”
This current low level also removes any buffer to skyrocketing gasoline prices and the rising cost of any products made from oil byproducts. This is not the only far-ranging problem for everyday living. The cost of diesel fuel (think trucks, farm equipment, airplanes and all forms of transportation) has exceeded historical highs at over $6/gallon. This will impact everything the typical American household relies on during the week.
