Another Nail in America’s Coffin?

With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the break-up of its satellite nations, Ukraine inherited the third largest stockpile of nuclear weapons, including 1,900 strategic nuclear weapons, thanks to the destruction of the communist bloc.  The United States and the West were not comfortable, nor was Russia, with Ukraine harboring such a dangerous cache of destructive military material.

However, under guarantees from Russia, Britain and the United States for its safety, on December 5, 1994, Ukraine signed the Budapest Memorandum.  This obligated the U.S., Britain and Russia to respect Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and borders and to “refrain from the threat or use of force.”

In exchange, Ukraine would give up all its nuclear stockpile, with the remaining nukes given to Russia in 1996.

Of course, Russia and Vladimir Putin violated that agreement in 2014 with the takeover of the Crimea.  The United States and Briton remained silent and unmoved, thus signaling their silent consent and giving Putin the “green light” for further aggression.  However, Putin’s plans were allayed by President Trump’s administration.

With the election of Joe Biden as the new U.S. leader, Putin knew he had a weak adversary and had the upper hand.  He knew the West would institute sanctions, but knew he could count on China who has its own territorial ambitions.  Sanctions mean nothing to tyrants and dictators.  Just look at Iran, North Korea and Venezuela as examples.

Despite repeated pleas from the president of Ukraine, the U.S. has reneged on its security guarantees for the Ukraine.  Putin has called the West’s bluff and won.  What will prevent him from breaching the boundaries of other former Soviet satellites?  What deterrents does the West have left?

America has abdicated its position as a world leader.  It can no longer be trusted to follow through on its commitments.  It is no longer a respected world power and tyrants smell blood in the water.

God forgive us for yet another sin against humanity.

Author’s Note: The war against Ukraine continues to rage despite President Trump’s overtures for a war ending peace deal. President Trump keeps saying that he has a good relationship with Vladamir Putin (not so much wit President Zelenski). From this writer’s perspective and biblical understanding, it would seem that President Trump does not fully understand the nature of true evil, as in certain world leaders like Putin or those of China, Iran or North Korea. Evil is evil. There is no bargaining with evil. Evil despots only want to inflict more evil and conquer more territory and people, until they are stopped.

Evil leaders do not seek peace. They only seek victory through deception and oppression. Ukraine did not start this war. If anyone is responsible in the West, it is the United States. Yet, President Trump puts the onus of responsibility on President Zelenski and not Putin. The Body of Christ needs to get serious about praying for President Trump and his administration to have God’s wisdom and discernment when dealing with evil and evil leaders.
